2020-2021 Meal Plan Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I select a Meal Plan?

We have All-Access Meal Plan for students who live on campus. The meal plan also includes $200 per semester in Dining Dollars to use at campus retail locations.

Students who live off-campus have the option of choosing the All-Access Meal Plan or the Commuter Plan.

Where can I use my meal plan?

The All-Access Meal Plan can be used in PNC Colonial Café anytime you wish and as many times as you wish. Come in for a full meal, quick snack, or just a beverage. Dining Dollars can be used at campus retail locations including RoMo’s Café, Hale Café, Yorktown Café, and Yorktown Fast Stand, and the West Express Market.

Can I really eat as much as I want?

Yes, as the name implies, the All-Access Meal Plan is essentially like a membership that allows you to come and go with some basic parameters so there is no longer a need to count your meal plan dollars for each meal.

How do I register for my meal plan?

The meal plan registration is part of the housing contract in the Sentry Secured Services. Fall 2020 housing will open on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

Do I have to select which meal plan I want every year?

The meal plan structure has changed! As part of the housing contract, resident students will be enrolled into the All-Access Plan which features $200 in Dining Dollars.

How do I purchase Dining Dollars?

You may add additional Dining Dollars online through Sentry Secure Services, OR stopping into the Freedom Card office in Patrick Henry, OR making a deposit at the new Colonial Cash Machine by Hopwood Hall.

What is the difference between Dining Dollars and Colonial Cash?

Dining Dollars are a supplement to the meal plan and can be used in any on-campus location that sells food items. Dining Dollars are tax exempt and must be used within the Academic Year. Colonial Cash is a debit account available to all students, faculty, and staff and is loaded onto your Freedom Card for use on both campus and participating off-campus locations in Moon Township. A list of locations that accepts Colonial Cash can be found at RMU.edu.

Do my Dining Dollars carry over if I don't use them?

Since Dining Dollars are a part of a student's meal plan, they must be used within the Academic Year. Dining Dollars will carry over from the Fall Semester to the Spring Semester, but any unused funds will expire in May during the current Academic Year. (Note: If a meal plan is not continued into Spring semester, any leftover Dining Dollars will be forfeited after the meal plan change period, which usually runs about one week into the semester).

Where can I find dining hall menus and hours of operation?

The hours of operation can be found online at RMU.edu. Menu information and hours of operation can also be found on the free FoodU App which is available for apple and android devices.

What do I do if I have a special dietary need or food allergy?

The RMU Center for Student Success and RMU Dining Team work together to assist students with special dietary needs. Contact diningservices@rmu.edu to get connected. Special accommodations can also be requested in the housing contract.

What if I am sick and I can't make it to the dining hall?

If you have an isolating sickness, such as influenza, or you are too sick to leave your room, you can arrange to receive a hot meal from the PNC Café to be picked up by a friend or roommate. The sick student’s friend or roommate can get sick meal pick-up form from their Community Advisor or Residence Director.

Who do I contact whenever I have a great idea?

Please feel free to contact the Dining Management Team at any time with your ideas, comments or suggestions. All management team members are available during the meal periods in the PNC Colonial Cafe. You may also submit your ideas through the “My Ideas” section of the FoodU app.

I live in Yorktown, can I use my meal plan there?

Yorktown has a great option for students to use their meal plan. The full Yorktown Dinner menu is available from 5:00 PM - 12:00 PM daily. Students will be able to use their All-Access Meal Plan at the Yorktown Café which converts to a Meal Swipe Equivalency. A Meal Equivalency is when a student swipes their card to redeem it for a pre-determined meal; as an example, the meal can be a Sandwich, chips, and beverage. Students may use up to 2 Meal Equivalencies from the hours of 5:00PM - 12:00 PM. Additionally, Dining Dollars can also be used at Yorktown Café.

Where are Meal Swipe Equivalencies accepted?

Meal Equivalency is available at Yorktown Café from 5:00 PM – 12:00 PM daily. Students may use up to two Meal Swipe Equivalencies in one day.

I don’t live at Yorktown, can I still dine at the Yorktown Café?

Yes, students with the All-Access Meal plan can dine at Yorktown Café.

If I use a Meal Swipe Equivalency at 5:00 PM at Yorktown, can I then go to PNC Café and Swipe in for a snack after night class?

Yes, the All-Access Meal Plan gives unlimites access to the PNC Colonial Café.

I have a night class, will there be anywhere for me to eat?

We understand the students have varied schedule from early morning to late evening. The PNC Colonial Café operates on the following schedule:


Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM 
Friday 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM 
Saturday 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM 
Sunday 8:00 AM – 11:00 PM 

Can I share my Meal Plan or use it for guests?

Your All-Access Meal Plan is non-transferable and may only be used by you. You may use your guest passes for a friend of family member. However, keep in mind that guests can always pay with cash, credit card, or colonial cash.

How do I use my Guest Passes?

Guest Passes are automatically loaded onto your Freedom Card at the beginning of each semester, just like Dining Dollars. To use, notify the checker at the entrance of the dining center that you want to use your Guest Pass(es). Each swipe after the initial swipe for the cardholder’s entrance will deduct one (1) Guest Pass from your Freedom Card balance.

Guest Passes do expire at the end of each semester. If you run out of Guest Passes, you may purchase a meal at the door rate, using Dining Dollars, cash, credit card, or Colonial Cash.

Can I use my Dining Dollars at the Vending Machines?

No

I lost my Freedom Card, what do I do?

The Freedom Card is the official Robert Morris University photo identification card. It is the card owner's responsibility to protect his/her Freedom Card. The cardholder must report a lost or stolen Freedom Card immediately. The cardholder is responsible for any account activity made prior to reporting the loss of the Freedom Card. In the event a card has been misplaced and cannot be found, it can be temporarily frozen or permanently deactivated by calling 412-397-5496 during normal business hours or by emailing freedomcard@rmu.edu. The RMU Dining Services Office in the PNC Colonial Café can issue a temporary card at no fee with a valid picture ID. Temporary cards are valid for 3 days.
